The space of the folding plate -- the redesign of urban warfare is my undergraduate graduation project, which was exhibited in Zhejiang Exhibition Center from 01/06/2024 to 10/06/2024.
At the beginning of the project, I studied the definition, mechanical properties and history of folding plate structure, and made an origami model to simulate its shape in the building. Then, I redesigned the folding structure at different scales -- furniture scale, room scale, building scale, city scale -- to adapt to different scales.
Then I chose Hangzhou City Station as the site to renovate the original city station, so that it can meet the soaring passenger flow in modern times and better suit the needs of today's passengers.
A folding plate is a thin-walled structure consisting of a number of plates rigidly connected together at a certain dihedral Angle along its edges, so that the structural system can bear loads without the need for additional support beams along the mutual edges.
The mechanical characteristics of folded plate structure make it suitable for long-span buildings. The change of density and Angle causes the change of scale and shape of the space formed by the folded plate structure. The modular characteristics of the folding plate make it can be associated with the traffic flow line and the space function.
According to this feature, folding plate structure is extremely suitable for long-span traffic weights. This work selects the traffic station as the object of redesign, utilizes the spatial and mechanical characteristics of the folding plate, combines the structure with the architecture in terms of space, scale and streamline, and breaks the stereotype of the folding plate structure as a decorative shell design.
In this design, the folding structure changes from a supporting role to a leading role, using its structural changes to drive the flow of space and point the direction of passengers home.
